Your first sim racing setup
Start with the platform and game. Then check the wheel, pedals and mounting.
The short version
- Write down the exact console generation or Windows PC, and the game you intend to play.
- Choose a documented wheel/platform combination. Check the rim and pedals separately when changing parts.
- Check mounting, package contents and the final delivered price before ordering.
1. Platform first
Similar names do not mean the same compatibility. Logitech lists the G29 for PlayStation and PC, and the G920 for Xbox and PC. Logitech's model comparison is a useful example of why the exact edition matters.
The platform guides link directly to reviewed examples. Other models remain available as explicit unknowns in the checker.
2. Choose the drive type
Read the manufacturer's description for the particular model rather than treating a drive category as a recommendation. Thrustmaster describes the T300RS GT as a dual-belt system and the T128 as HYBRID DRIVE; MOZA specifies direct drive for its R5. T300RS GT · T128 · R5.
Decide how much space you can use, what you can mount securely, and your total budget for all required parts. This guide does not rank models by an invented performance score or universal torque target.
3. Check what is in the package
A complete wheel-and-pedal package is a useful place to start comparing. Verify its exact edition, included pedals, power supply, cables and clamp on the maker's page. For example, the T128 page lists its T2PM pedal set, and the R5 Racing Bundle lists an ES wheel and SR-P Lite pedals. T128 contents · R5 contents.
Open a reviewed G29 / PlayStation 5 example. This is a compatibility example, not a best-buy ranking.
4. Changing a base or rim
Check the exact rim/base pair, then the base/platform pair. A matching quick release does not settle the platform or game question. Read connection conditions in full.
Check the ES rim with the original R5 · Check SR-P Lite pedals with the R5.
The checker does not validate adapters or a complete mixed-brand rig. If an answer is unknown, ask the maker for the exact combination and connection path.
5. What it bolts to
Before ordering, check the maker's mounting instructions, the desk or stand dimensions, pedal attachment and the space needed to enter and leave the seat. Work through the mounting checklist.
6. PC and display requirements
Use the game's current requirements for your operating system, graphics, storage and display or headset. A wheel connection answer does not promise that a PC can run the game at your chosen resolution.
For example, Assetto Corsa's publisher listing on Steam includes separate system requirements and a VR support note. Read the listing for the exact game and edition you plan to use. Check any headset's own requirements as well.
7. Check the game
Open the game's own wheel-support documentation. Match the platform, model, firmware and game version. Platform support and game support are separate checks.
- Gran Turismo 7: steering wheel controllers
- Forza Support: select the exact Motorsport or Horizon title and its wheel documentation
- Thrustmaster's T300RS GT page: game lists and documentation
This site does not maintain a separate game-support database. An old review saying a model is absent from a game list is not treated as a current incompatibility answer.
8. Before you order
- Save the checker links for the exact pairs you checked.
- Read the source, review date, cable requirements and model scope.
- Confirm mounting and the game's own support.
- Compare the final package and delivered total with the seller.
